The story

Page 276 of Charles Estienne's De Dissectione, Paris, 1545. A woman leans on a cushioned bed with one hand raised in speech, a curtain looped above her and a carved chest at her feet; the tablet on the wall beside her explains how the infant lies within. Estienne was a physician from the great Paris family of printers, and his book appeared two years after Vesalius's, with a gentler, domestic idea of how a body should be shown. The Wellcome Collection's copy, photographed whole with its running head.
